Where to Recycle Paint, Oil, Batteries and More

Post Date:04/24/2017

On Saturday, April 22, the Village held its first ever Earth Day Recycling event and was blown away by how popular the event was!

We recycled:

4,650 Gallons Latex Paint
2,100 Gallons Oil-Based Paint
400 Gallons of Motor oil
100 Gallons of anti-freeze
500 CFL Bulbs
3- 30 gallon bins full or medications
1-50 gallon sharps container
4 5-Gallon Buckets of household batteries
1 Pallet of Fire Extinguishers
1 Vanload of Clothing
12 Bicycles
2 dozen American Flags, and much more!

Due to the heavy attendance we understand that not all residents were able to participate in the event. Below is a list of places you can recycle or dispose of many of the items being collected at Saturday's event:

CFL Light Bulbs & Household Batteries – Elk Grove Village residents can drop off CFL bulbs and Household alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V) and rechargeable (NiCd, NiMh, lithium ion, lithium polymer) batteries at the Community Development counter on the first floor of Village Hall (901 Wellington Ave) on Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm.  Find out more about how to package the batteries and CFLs on the Village website.

Clothing/Household Goods – The WINGS Elk Grove Village logistics center (1265 Oakton Street, 847-519-7820, ext. 354) accepts clothing, household goods, gently used furniture, housewares and in-season décor.

Medications & Sharps - Elk Grove Village residents can drop off expired and unwanted pharmaceuticals,  medications and needles (sharps) to the Fire Administration counter in the lower level of the Elk Grove Village Municipal Complex, 901 Wellington Avenue on Monday  - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Prescription medications and over the counter medications will be accepted.  Liquid medications and pharmaceutical controlled substances are not accepted.  Find out more about how to package sharps on the Village website

Antifreeze & Motor Oil - Elk Grove Marathon Service (1195 Rohlwing Rd, 847-301-0058) accepts antifreeze, gasoline, and car batteries at no cost; oil for $1/gallon; and tires for $4 per tire.

Latex paint can be disposed of at home because it is a non-toxic, water-based paint. You can add an absorbent material such as shredded newspapers, kitty litter, sawdust, or waste paint hardener to your latex paint and let it dry out completely in a well-ventilated area and away from children and pets. Once it is dry, put the container in your regular garbage with the lid off.

Oil-based paint (along with Aerosol Cans, Fire Extinguishers, Automotive Batteries, Household Cleaners, pesticides and fertilizers) can be recycled at the Naperville Household Hazardous Waste Facility (156 Fort Hill Drive, 630-420-4190), which is open most Saturdays and Sundays from 9am – 2pm.
