Project Description

This project will replace the existing Clearmont Pedestrian Bridge over Salt Creek with a new 400-foot span by 14-foot wide structure. With the new structure being twice the length of the existing bridge, it removes the structure from the floodplain, reducing flooding, and eliminating closures of the bridge.  The wider bridge deck will accommodate cyclists pulling trailers and facilitate the shared use by pedestrians and cyclists.  The new steel truss bridge will also include replacement of pathway lighting, aesthetic improvements, and installation of an overlook for pedestrians to view wildlife.

Project Updates

August 9, 2024: ComEd completed the electric connection and meter installation.  The bridge lighting is now operational and is on from dusk until dawn, similar to the Village’s street lights.

June 28, 2024: The Clearmont Pedestrian Bridge is now open! On Thursday, June 20, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the opening of the new Clearmont Pedestrian Bridge. Village officials were joined by State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro, in addition to staff from other state and county elected officials' offices.

The new 400-foot-long and 14-foot-wide structure welcomes pedestrians and cyclists alike to utilize the shared-use facility. The new bridge also includes upgrades such as LED lighting, aesthetic improvements, and the installation of overlooks to view wildlife.

June 14, 2024: This week, Clearmont Drive was paved at the east side of the bridge, the electrical contractor continued installing the bridge lights and bollards, and the bridge piers were stained. Additionally, the bridge railings were installed, final grading was completed followed by placement of seed and blanket. Next week, work will finalize before the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on June 20th.

May 31, 2024: This week, the electrical subcontractor continued installing the LED lights on the bridge. Storm sewer was also installed on the east side of the bridge at Clearmont Drive and the concrete bike bath was poured on the west side of the bridge. Next week, work will continue on the electrical aspects of the project as well as the remaining concrete work.

May 24, 2024: This week, the contractor removed and poured the curb and gutter and sidewalk on Essex Road. The electrical subcontractor also installed the LED lights on the bridge. Next week, bridge and site lighting is will continue.

May 17, 2024: This week, Lorig Construction poured the concrete bridge deck.  Lorig utilized a concrete pumper truck to pump the concrete up and onto the deck, and two custom welded “trolley scaffolds,” which rolled along the top of the bridge and allowed workers to work above the finished concrete without stepping on it.  The trolley scaffold was needed to cover and water the newly finished bridge deck for proper concrete curing.  Next week, bridge and site lighting is anticipated to begin.

May 10, 2024: This week, iron workers installed rebar for the approach slabs and reinforced concrete bridge deck.  The contractor anticipates pouring the concrete bridge deck and approach slabs next week, as well as beginning bridge and site lighting installation.

May 3, 2024: This week, over the course of three days, the steel bridge structure was delivered to the site in sections, connected together and craned into place. Next week, iron workers will continue installing rebar for the approach slabs and reinforced concrete bridge deck.

April 26, 2024: Next week, weather dependent, the steel bridge structure is scheduled to be delivered to the site in sections, connected together and craned into place.

April 12, 2024: Due to last week’s rain, the bridge was unable to be delivered and installed. The next window for availability for both the crane rental and trucking from the bridge supplier to align is the week of April 29th. It is anticipated that during the week on April 29th, the crane will mobilize and the bridge sections will be delivered and set in place.

April 5, 2024: This week, no work occurred due to weather conditions.  Next week, the steel bridge structure is anticipated to be delivered to the site in sections, connected together and craned into place.

March 29, 2024: This week, Lorig Construction poured the decorative entryway pedestals at the east and west ends of the bridge, utilizing a brick form liner and the Village's elk head logo. The logos will be colorized at a later date. The contractor also drilled the pier- and abutment-bearing anchor bolts in preparation to set the steel bridge structure. Next week, the steel bridge structure will be delivered to the site in sections, connected together, and craned into place, depending on the weather.

March 15, 2024: This week, Lorig Construction installed underdrain pipe and riprap (protective stones) at the east and west abutments. Lorig also worked on grading and path removal on the west side. Next week, the contractor will lay out and drill holes for anchor bolts on the east and west abutments and pier. They will also accept delivery for the bridge bearing assembly and anchor bolts.

March 8, 2024: This week, Lorig Construction stripped the formwork (molds for concrete structures) for the wing wall and back wall at the west abutment. They also shaped the earthwork along the path on the east side. Next week, the contractor will install underdrain pipe and riprap (protective stones) at the east abutment as well as grading and path removal on the west side.

March 1, 2024: This week, Lorig Construction framed and poured the wing wall and back wall at the west abutment (these are support structures). Next week, the contractor will continue to work on the approach slab on the west side of the bridge. (An approach slab is a concrete slab below the pavement that extends beyond the edge of the bridge to provide a transition between pavement and the bridge.)

February 23, 2024: This week, Lorig Construction framed and poured the reinforced concrete pier cap and west abutment foundation.  The pier cap is the upper part of the vertical concrete support for the bridge, while the abutments are on each end.  Next week, the contractor will continue to work on framing and pouring the reinforced concrete west abutment and will begin placing aggregate rip-rap at the pier and abutments to protect from scour and erosion due to flowing water.

February 16, 2024: This week, Lorig Construction poured the reinforced concrete pier stem and east abutment wing wall.  The pier stem is the center part of the vertical concrete support for the bridge, while the abutments are on each end, and the wing walls flare our and hold back adjacent soil.  Next week, the contractor will continue to work on framing and pouring the reinforced concrete abutments and pier.

February 9, 2024: This week, Lorig Construction poured the west abutment piles and framed and poured the east abutment and pier foundations. Next week, the contractor will continue to work on the reinforced concrete abutments and pier.

February 2, 2024: This week, Lorig Construction dug for the bridge foundations and drove piles for the east abutment and piers. Next week, the contractor will dig and drive the piles for the new foundation on the west side and begin construction of the east side footing.

January 26, 2024: This week, Lorig Construction removed of the east and west bridge abutments. Test piles were also driven for the foundation of the new bridge on the east side. Next week, the contractor will dig and drive the piles for the new foundation on the east side and drive the test piles for the west side.

January 19, 2024: This week, work on the demolition of Clearmont Bridge continued as the contractor removed the existing bridge structure. The demolition process will continue next week with the removal of the bridge abutments. Test piles will also be driven for the foundation of the new bridge.

January 12, 2024: This week, the Clearmont Pedestrian Bridge was closed to the public and the contractor began the process of removing the existing bridge. Demolition was kicked off with the removal of the fence, rails and light poles. Additionally, the contractor stripped and excavated the topsoil for the site. Next week, work will continue on the demolition of the bridge structure, weather permitting.

January 5, 2024: The Clearmont Pedestrian Bridge will be closed starting Monday, January 8, and will reopen upon the completion of the new bridge in May or June.

August 30, 2023: The Clearmont Pedestrian Bridge replacement has been delayed for several weeks, awaiting final confirmation of steel material delivery and final bridge fabrication date.  The bridge is expected to be complete and ready for delivery this winter.  With the delayed bridge fabrication, the contractor will be waiting to remove the existing pedestrian bridge until after the New Year.  The path will be closed sometime in January or February to allow for bridge removal and pouring of new bridge abutments and a bridge pier.  The bridge is projected to be set in place in March, followed by electrical work, final site grading and improvements, and pouring of the concrete bridge deck and approach walkways.  We anticipate the path and bridge being re-opened to the public in late April or early May of 2024.

May 12, 2023: This week, the contractor excavated and regraded land north of the volleyball courts at Morton Park to provide additional flood storage to compensate for the work that will be performed around Clearmont Bridge. The area was graded and re-sod this week and should not be affected by further work.

March 31, 2023: Work began last week on the Clearmont Pedestrian Bridge Replacement project with tree removal taking place. This week, underground utility lines were dug and identified in preparation for relocating the utility lines in conflict with the new bridge footprint.

The bridge will continue to remain open during the early stages of construction. A late summer/early fall closure of the bridge is anticipated, once preparation work begins to replace the bridge.

March 17, 2023: Work will begin soon on the project to replace the Clearmont Pedestrian Bridge Over Salt Creek with tree removal and clearing being completed by the end of March. Following tree removal, utility relocation work will take place.

The biggest impact on the project’s schedule is the fabrication of the steel bridge. It is anticipated that the bridge fabrication will be completed in late fall. In the months leading up to the delivery and replacement of the bridge, preparation work will include the closing of the path and removal of the existing bridge. The bridge will remain open until the preparation work begins, which is anticipated to be late summer/early fall, pending bridge fabrication date.
