National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

The Elk Grove Village Police Department is inviting the public to participate in the 21st National Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at the Elk Grove Village Police Department lobby (901 Wellington Ave) from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. As part of this event, participants can turn in their expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs anonymously at no cost. Please note that needles, sharps or liquids will not be accepted.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative is a joint effort of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and law enforcement agencies across the nation to provide the public an opportunity to remove potentially dangerous prescription drugs from their homes as they can be highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rate of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issues.

DEA, along with its law enforcement partners, has now collected 7,262 tons of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs since the inception of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative in 2010. The last Take-Back Day in April 2021 alone brought in 420 tons (839,543 pounds) of medication.

If you have any questions about the Take-Back Day, please visit TakeBackDay.dea.gov or contact the Elk Grove Village Police Department at (847) 357-4100.
