The new licensing year is effective on June 1 for all businesses, occupations, and activities required to be licensed under the Elk Grove Village Municipal Code. Businesses conducting retail sales of any product or merchandise require a license. All food, beverage, and cigarette vending machines as well as coin-operated amusement/musical devices must also display a valid license. Other activities requiring a business license include day care centers, food caterers, and retail establishments.

Companies are responsible for obtaining all necessary licenses. Pre-printed license applications for businesses currently licensed were mailed in mid-April. For further information, or to determine if your business requires a license, please call the Finance Department at (847) 357-4062 or stop by the Finance Counter in the Municipal Building. In addition, business license applications and a fee schedule are available on the Village website.

The annual fee for a business license covers the cost of making inspections necessary to safeguard public safety, health, and welfare. Failure to obtain a license can result in fines of $50 to $500 per day.

New businesses can also apply for a Cook County Class 6B property tax abatement which is designed to encourage industrial development by offering a real estate tax incentive for the development of new industrial facilities, the rehabilitation of existing industrial structures, and the industrial reutilization of abandoned buildings. The goal of Class 6B is to attract new industry, stimulate expansion and retention of existing industry and increase employment opportunities.

A Cook County Class C property tax abatement is also available which is similar but intended for contaminated, abandoned properties or contaminated vacant land (“brownfields”) that will be remediated and used for industrial purposes.
