Parkway Tree Trimming

The Public Works Forestry Division is responsible for the maintenance of the Village's parkway trees.  This includes cyclical trimming (or pruning) of the trees to remove hazardous branches, improve the health of the tree, and beautify the Village's tree canopy.  The trimming is conducted by both Public Works Staff, as well as a contractor, within 9 sections of the Village.

How is the Village divided into 9 sections?

The Village has a pruning schedule in which we trim 3 sections each winter, thus each tree is trimmed and assessed by the contractor approximately once every 3 years.  Below is a map of the 9 sections.

Why is winter pruning more important than other times of the year?

Pruning during the active season can cause stress for the trees and can stimulate additional growth that won't be able to harden before the temperatures drop.  Trees go dormant in the winter, making it the perfect time to prune.  With extra energy reserves, trees are able to heal more quickly.  Additionally, many of the pests and diseases that infect trees through pruning cuts are also dormant during the winter months.

Which trees are trimmed by the Public Works Staff vs the contractor?

Public Works Staff trim trees that have a DBH of 7 inches and below, and the contractor trims trees with a DBH above 7 inches.

How can I view the trimming schedule?

The Public Works Department is debuting a new tree trimming dashboard!  Using this map, viewers can see which trees are scheduled to be trimmed and which trees have already been trimmed.  You can view the dashboard by clicking here.
