Project Description
This project will include a new bi-directional turn lane on Arlington Heights Road from Newport Avenue to Brantwood Avenue to address existing traffic back-ups and increase safety on this 1.2 mile stretch of road.
- New bi-directional left turn lanes on Arlington Heights Rd.
- Pavement rehabilitation including pavement patching, full curb replacement, and hot mix asphalt overlay on Arlington Heights Rd. Replacement and widening of the existing sidewalk on Arlington Heights Road
- Replacement and widening of the existing sidewalk on both sides of Arlington Heights Road.
- Pedestrian signal modifications at Biesterfield Rd/ JF Kennedy Blvd intersection.
- Enhancements to medians, landscaping, retaining walls, and crosswalks.
- ADA curb ramp improvements
Project Updates
May 12, 2023: This week, the contractor completed installing the decorative medians along the Arlington Heights Road corridor. The landscaper also continued to installing the plantings and sod along the western side of Arlington Heights Road. The final aspect of the project is installing the decorative handrail on the ramp accessing Elk Grove Town Center. The Village will continue to monitor the sodding to guaranty establishment before closing out the job.
May 5, 2023: This week, the contractor continued installing the decorative crosswalks along the Arlington Heights Road corridor. The landscaper also continued to installing the plantings and sod along the western side of Arlington Heights Road.
April 28, 2023: This week, the contractor began construction of the decorative crosswalks along the Arlington Heights Road corridor. Final grading work was completed on the west side of Arlington Heights Road, with grass restoration to follow. Next week, the contractor will be completing final landscaping items, the decorative crosswalks and medians and will be installing the remaining signs within the median.
April 21, 2023: This week, the contractor cleaned the storm sewer system within the project limits and installed fencing on the ends of the east retaining wall. Topsoil was also placed behind the sidewalk on the west side of Arlington Heights Road from Brantwood Avenue to Boardwalk Street. Next week, work on the decorative medians will begin and landscape restoration work will continue.
April 14, 2023: This week, the contractor removed and replaced the sidewalk on the west side of Arlington Heights Road from Brantwood Avenue to Boardwalk Street. The concrete apron across Village Grove Drive was replaced as well. Installation of the parapet railing began on the retaining wall on the east side of Arlington Heights Road.
Next week, crews will be out cleaning the storm sewer system within the project limits, right-of-way fencing will be installed on the ends of the east retaining wall, and preparation for final landscaping will begin on the west side of Arlington Heights Road.
March 31, 2023: Beginning the week of April 3, the outside lane of southbound Arlington Heights road will be closed as work resumes to complete the Arlington Heights Road Improvements project. As part of the work, the sidewalk on the west side of Arlington Heights Road from Brantwood Avenue to Boardwalk Street will be closed as well.
December 2, 2022: This week, the contractor completed the final surface of asphalt and began installing the pavement markings. Next week, the contractor will prepare the site for the winter shutdown before the remaining items can be completed in the spring.
November 18, 2022: This week, the contractor adjusted sewer structures in the roadway and installed traffic signal detector loops at the Biesterfield Road intersection. Next week, longitudinal joint sealant will be installed on the binder and the final asphalt surface will be placed.
November 11, 2022: This week, the contractor milled the existing pavement and paved the binder course along the Arlington Heights Road corridor. Next week, sewer structures in the roadway will be adjusted to final height, traffic signal detector loops will be installed at the Biesterfield Road and Arlington Heights Road intersection, and longitudinal joint sealant will be placed on the binder.
November 4, 2022: This week, the contractor poured and opened the remaining driveways on the west side of the Arlington Heights Road. Sidewalk work on the west side also continued.
Next week, and over the course of the next 2.5 weeks, the intersection portion of the Arlington Heights Road project will begin. Various construction activities at the Biesterfield Road and Arlington Heights Road intersection will cause stopped traffic, lane switches, and potential extremely long delays. If possible, avoidance of this intersection is recommended. Otherwise, please allow extra time to navigate the area.
October 28, 2022: This week, the contractor continued sequencing the removal and construction of driveway aprons and radius returns on the west side of the road. Full depth patches were completed at the intersection of Biesterfield/JFK. Sidewalk removal and grading for the new sidewalk also continued on the west side. Landscaping continued including the plantings of perennials and shrubs on the east side of the road and sod was placed in median.
Next week, the remaining driveways are expected to be removed and constructed on the west side of the road. Pavement milling is expected in the asphalt section near the intersection of Biesterfield/JFK and landscaping work will continue.
October 21, 2022: This week, the contractor continued sequencing the removal and construction of driveway aprons and radius returns on the west side of the road. Sidewalk removal and grading for the new sidewalk also continued on the west side. Landscaping began including the plantings of perennials and shrubs began on the east side of the road. Please be aware that access to Boardwalk Street will be closed starting Saturday 10/22/2022 for approximately 10 days.
Next week, driveway aprons poured this week will be opened and the contractor will close, remove and construct the remaining driveway aprons on the west side. Sidewalk removal and grading will continue and landscaping is expected to be completed on the east side and in the medians. Pavement milling and patching will follow once the driveways are complete.
October 7, 2022: This week, the contractor formed and poured concrete for the curb and gutter along the west driveways and sidewalk on the east side of the road. Electrical work for roadway lighting and traffic signals occurred near the intersection of Biesterfield Road. The east and west wall staining was completed this week. Please be aware that there will be NO SIDEWALK/PEDESTRIAN ACCESS on Arlington Heights Road from Newport Avenue to Biesterfield/JFK until next week due to continued progress with construction and delays filling gaps due to material shortages.
Next week, the contractor is expected to complete the concrete sidewalk and curb on the east side of the road. Once the concrete cures, pedestrian access will be available on the east side of the road from Newport Avenue to Brantwood Avenue. Additional work includes pouring concrete at the west driveways and removal of sidewalk on the west side of the road from Newport Avenue to Biesterfield Road.
September 30, 2022: This week, the contractor continued preparing and forming the curb and gutter along the entrances of the side streets and across driveway aprons. The stone base and backfill for the sidewalk at the east were complete and handhole adjustments were performed. The east and west wall staining began and will continue through next week.
Next week, the contractor is expected to pour concrete curb and gutter at the west side streets and driveways that were removed last week. The sidewalk at the east wall will be poured and concrete straining will continue. Please be aware that there will be NO SIDEWALK/PEDESTRIAN ACCESS on Arlington Heights Road from Newport Avenue to Biesterfield/JFK due to continued progress with construction and the contractor unable to fill gaps due to material shortages. Access on the east side of the road is expected by the end of next week. Temporary sidewalk/pedestrian access north of Biesterfield/JFK will be in place on the west side of the road.
September 23, 2022: This week, the contractor poured the west curb and gutter by the method of slip forming on Arlington Heights Road from south of Brantwood Avenue to Newport Avenue. Additional work included the placement of asphalt binder at the west side streets, driveway removals and base preparation, backfilling the east retaining in preparation for sidewalk, and underdrain installation at the west retaining wall.
Next week, the contractor is expected to form and pour curb and gutter at the radius returns of the west side streets and pour concrete driveways that were removed this week. The sidewalk at the east wall south of Biesterfield Road/JFK Boulevard will be poured and the contractor will focus on sidewalk removal on the west side of the road south of the intersection at the end of the week.
September 16, 2022: This week, the contractor set string-line for the west curb and gutter on Arlington Heights Road and removed pavement and placed temporary stone for access on the west side streets. Crews also framed and poured concrete at the west retaining wall. Work at the east wall continued with pipe underdrain installation followed by stone backfill work.
Next week, the contractor will place the asphalt binder course on the west side streets and slipform the concrete curb and gutter on the west side of Arlington Heights Road. Additional work will include drainage work at the west wall and forming and pouring concrete for the sidewalk at the east wall.
September 9, 2022: This week, the contractor continued pouring concrete for the widened sidewalk near the intersections on the east side of the road. Crews completed pouring concrete for the east retaining wall, began placing lighting conduit, and installed the wall drain. The west retaining forming work also continued this week.
Next week, the contractor expects to complete the widened sidewalk on the east side of the road. Once the east side sidewalk is cured, it will be opened to pedestrians. Crews will move to the west side to begin sidewalk, driveway, and pavement removal on the side streets. Additional work will include forming and pouring the west retaining wall.
September 2, 2022: This week, the contractor began pouring concrete for the widened sidewalk on the east side of the road. Stone and framing crews for the sideway continued working north between JFK Blvd and Brantwood Ave. Additionally, crews poured concrete for the east retaining wall and continued curb removal on the west side of the road.
Next week, the contractor expects to complete the newly widened sidewalk and retaining wall work on the east side. Once the sidewalk is cured and opened to pedestrians on the east side, crews will move to the west side to begin sidewalk removal and begin slip-forming concrete for the new curb and gutter. Additionally, forming crews will begin at the west retaining wall.
August 26, 2022: This week, the contractor continued excavating, placing stone, and forming the new sidewalk on the east side of Arlington Heights Road. The east side retaining wall forming work and west side retaining wall demolition continued and the side streets at Newport Avenue, Clearmont Drive, and Shelly Road were paved with asphalt.
Next week, the contractor will continue forming and pouring concrete for the east wall, placing stone, forming, and pouring the newly widened sidewalk on the east side of the road, and continue the west wall demolition. Please pay attention to construction signage and be aware that temporary side street and driveway closures will occur over the next several weeks.
August 19, 2022: This week, the contractor poured concrete driveway aprons, started excavating for the new sidewalk, and began forming the retaining wall on the east side of Arlington Heights Road. Curb removal on the west side of the road continued along with the demolition of the west retaining wall. Next week, the contractor will continue forming and pouring concrete for the east wall, excavating and forming the newly widened sidewalk, and paving asphalt at the side streets on the east side of the road. The west wall demolition will also continue. Please pay attention to construction signage and be aware that temporary side street and driveway closures will occur over the next several weeks.
August 12, 2022: This week, the contractor poured concrete curb and gutter on the east side of Arlington Heights Road from Newport Avenue to just south of Brantwood Avenue. Curb and gutter gaps at drainage structures and around radius of the side streets were also poured this week. Demolition of the existing east retaining wall continued and the side streets at Newport Avenue and Clearmont Drive were excavated and prepared for asphalt. Next week, the east retaining wall will be formed in preparation for concrete and the demolition of the west retaining wall will begin. Additionally, the removal of curb and gutter on the west side of the road will continue. Please pay attention to construction signage and be aware that temporary side street and driveway closures will occur over the next several weeks.
August 5, 2022: This week, the contractor completed the removal of the existing curb and gutter as well as sidewalk on the east side of Arlington Heights Road from Newport Avenue to just south of Brantwood Avenue. Demolition of the existing retaining walls continued and the removal of the side streets at Newport Avenue and Clearmont Drive is ongoing. Next week, curb and gutter and a wider sidewalk will be poured on the east side of the road. Retaining wall demolition will continue and the side streets at Newport Avenue, Clearmont Drive, and Shelley Road will be replaced. Please pay attention to construction signage and be aware that temporary side street and driveway closures will occur over the next several weeks.
July 29, 2022: This week, the contractor began the complete removal of the existing curb and gutter and, sidewalk on the east side of Arlington Heights Road. Additional work included demolition of the existing retaining walls and drainage structure adjustments. Next week, curb and gutter and sidewalk removal on the east side of the road will be complete. Toward the end of next week, the contractor will begin framing and pouring the new widened concrete sidewalk and curb and gutter. Retaining wall demolition will continue. Please be aware that temporary closures to driveways and side streets will occur during this stage. Please adhere to the construction signage and be cautious when driving through the work zone.
July 21, 2022: This Friday, July 22, the Contractor is scheduled to perform a traffic switch on Arlington Heights Road from north of Devon Ave to south of Elk Grove Blvd. After the switch, traffic on Arlington Heights Road will be in the inside/median lanes with left turn or dual-left lanes open between the northbound and southbound lanes where barrier medians do not exist. The work zone will be in the outside lane and in the parkways on Arlington Heights Road. There will be no change to the EMS Detour Route.
Work in this stage includes complete removal and replacement of curb and gutter, sidewalks, driveways, and side streets. Additional work includes the replacement of the retaining walls near the intersection of Biesterfield/JFK. The expected duration of this stage is approximately 7 weeks provided the contractor can secure enough material with the ongoing operator’s strike.
July 15, 2022: This week, the contractor prepared and poured concrete curb and gutter in the proposed medians on Arlington Heights Road. Additionally, the contractor completed drainage structure adjustments on the inside lanes. Next week, the concrete median noses will be poured and the pavement will be swept. At the end of next week, traffic is expected to be switched into Stage 3 closing off the outside lanes and moving traffic to the inside/median lanes. Please be cautious when traveling through the work zone.
July 8, 2022: This week, the contractor completed full depth concrete patches along the inside lanes of Arlington Heights Road. Additional work included median preparations and drainage structure adjustments. Next week, the concrete medians will be poured as the existing pavement will be prepared for the Stage 3 traffic switch expected to occur the week of July 18th. Please be cautious when traveling through the work zone as the workers and construction equipment will be located in the inside lanes and median area with traffic in the outside lanes.
July 1, 2022: This week, the contractor continued Stage 2 work between Newport Avenue and Brantwood Drive including pavement removal, full depth concrete patches, and median preparation in the inside lanes of Arlington Heights Road. Next week, concrete pavement patches and medians will be completed. Traffic is expected to be shifted into Stage 3 within the next three weeks. Please be cautious when traveling through the work zone as the workers and construction equipment will be located in the inside lanes and median area with traffic in the outside lanes.
June 24, 2022: This week, the contractor continued Stage 2 work between Newport Avenue and Brantwood Drive including storm sewer installation, drainage structure adjustments, median grinding/removal, and saw cutting for pavement patching in the inside lanes of Arlington Heights Road. Next week, concrete pavement patches will be prepared and poured followed by the installation of the concrete median. Please be cautious when traveling through the work zone as the workers and construction equipment will be located in the inside lanes and median area with traffic located in the outside lanes.
June 17, 2022: This week, traffic on Arlington Heights Road was switched from the inside lanes to the outside lanes from Turner Avenue to Cosman Road as the contractor prepares for Stage 2 work. Work involved in Stage 2 includes pavement patching, storm sewer installation and adjustments, and median grinding/removal. Next week, the low-profile medians will be ground down, and storm sewer installation will commence. Please pay attention to the new lane configuration and use caution when traveling through the work zone.
June 14, 2022: Traffic Switch – Arlington Heights Road
Starting Wednesday, June 15, traffic will be shifted from the inside lanes to the outside lanes from Turner Avenue to Cosman Road as the project enters the second stage of construction. Work in this stage includes pavement patching, median removal/replacement, and drainage improvements on the inside lanes of Arlington Heights Road. We appreciate your patience. June 10, 2022: This week, drainage structure installations and adjustments in the outside lanes were complete. Additionally, full depth concrete patching operations continued in the outside lanes of Arlington Heights Road. Next week following patching operations, the outside lanes will be cleaned and prepared for the traffic to be shifted. The traffic switch will involve moving traffic from the inside lanes to the outside lanes from Turner Avenue to Cosman Road to begin pavement patching and median removal. Please pay attention to construction signs and use caution when traveling through the work zone.
June 3, 2022: This week, the installation of underground drainage structures and pipe continued. Full depth concrete patching operations began in the outside lanes of Arlington Heights Road. Next week, concrete patching operations and drainage structure adjustments in the outside lanes will be completed. Once patching operations are complete, the contractor anticipates switching traffic to the outside lanes with the work zone in the inside lanes and median area within the next two weeks. Please pay attention to construction signs and use caution when traveling through the work zone.
May 27, 2022: This week, installation of underground drainage structures and pipe began and erosion control measures were complete. Saw cutting the pavement in preparation for pavement patching has begun. Next week, drainage structure and pipe installation will continue along with frame adjustments in the pavement. Additional work will include pavement removal in preparation for concrete pavement patching on Arlington Heights Road. Please pay attention to construction signs and use caution when traveling through the work zone.
May 20, 2022: This week, existing light poles were removed, temporary lighting was installed and is operational, drainage pipe and structures were delivered, and erosion control measures have been installed. Next week, underground drainage installation and the removal of the sidewalk and curb and gutter will begin. May 13, 2022: This week, traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction between Turner Avenue and Cosman Road/Meadow Court as the project begins work on the first of four stages. Temporary lighting and construction signage were also installed this week. Next week, temporary lighting will be completed and erosion control measures will be installed in preparation for pavement patching in the outside lanes. Please pay attention to construction signs and use caution when traveling through the work zone.
May 10, 2022: Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Turner Avenue and Sylvan Court as the project begins work on the first of four stages of construction. Work for this stage is restricted to the outer lanes and will include pavement patching, retaining wall rehabilitation, and reconstruction of the Boardwalk Street entrance. Lane reductions are expected through October of this year. Expect delays and please use caution when traveling through the work zone.
